(no subject)
Aug. 14th, 2005 10:37 pmTook a look at the Oddysey rules yesterday, they look....interesting. There's nothing really wrong with the rules but I could bitch muchly about the setting; given that it is based on Ancient Rome/Greece (with a few other bits thrown in for good measure), I think they could have done so much better with the background, not to mention that some of it isn't the most imaginitive! Maybe I'm just feeling bitchy and maybe it's much better once you're actually there but I honestly think that most of the people reading this (ok, most of the ones who I know are reading it - I can't speak for random people that might have only just stumbled across it) could have done better!
Of course having said all of this I'll give it a chance anyway, it's roleplay afterall and when have you known me to turn down roleplay? Plus there's the bounciness of making costume and poncing about in white tunics and sandals and things being all philosopherish or priestessly (It's me and Jackie, of course we're playing mages or priestesses!).
Speaking of me writing better systems (see the flawless subject twist), Geyamir is taking shape rather nicely now, or it's mechanics are anyway. I just need to tidy them up a little and make some of the explanations comprehensible to people who aren't me then they're all set. Of course I also need to rework a lot of the background and finish some of the bits that are just titles with a blank page under them. I'll get around to it though. The important part is that I'm finally feeling like I've got something that I can throw at people to get an opinion on...The only problem with that is my usual reticence about showing anything to anyone when I'm not sure what they're going to say. It's not that I can't deal with criticism....I just don't like to :D
There's also the part of me that wants to put it on the rpol boards and hide behind the annonymity of a user name if people don't like it. To get to that stage though I need to have other people read it and (ideally) proof it for me so I don't have arseholes picking me up on the occasional slip in spelling or terminology (yes you really do get them everywhere!). The other problem I have with putting it on rpol is that the system is card based...56 cards to choose from and only a dice roller to work with...not fun, especially when the suit matters.
No, I think the first thing that needs doing is me handing copies of it to a few select people to read, then at least one of those gets to help me play test. After that I'll have to see. There have been vague discussions about attempting to get it printed, or at least a vanity run, but I'm missing one major thing, pretty pictures! Still, there are a few people that I can smile nicely at who might be able to help me with that.
Must stop bouncing and planning my master piece, I have other things that I want to be doing on here before bed. At least bouncing helps me forget about feminine ickiness, need sleep and painkillers and no bloating...not good. My mum's happy I timed my visit home a little better though, usually they get hit with me in full PMT mode, well I have to remind them of what they're missing once in a while.
