Abduction was one of the angles I thought of going with. In answer to the second part of your question; question 5 - What happened to the faery child left in her place?
There are all sorts of variations on the myths so I suppose one of my first jobs is to figure out which tradition I'm going with. A part of me says that there was a changeling left but it got found out and destroyed/dealt with. That still leaves me with an explanation to find though not to mention how did the parents know what it was/how to deal with it? Remind me again why I think this is fun?!
