I am officially unimpressed. The local council election results have been posted and our area is one of two in which the fucking BNP candidate won. What is more it won by quite a big margin. Unfortunately it does reflect the general atmosphere of the area but it doesn't make me any happier about one of those...individuals having any say in the world, let alone where it might affect me.

I can relate. The state I'm from - Louisiana - has had several situations where similar...individuals...either won elections or came close to. The most famous was when our choice for governor was between a white supremacist or a former governor who'd been run out on a rail for corruption. (To our credit - I guess - we chose the crook.)

Sounds like you had two lovely options to chose from there. I can't help but think that the crook was the lesser of two evils however.

BNP candidates being voted in just makes me even happier that I no longer live in the place.

It really became the 'evil we knew' vs. the evil we didn't. Besides, Louisiana has been traditionally lenient with our elected officials about corruption - we kind of expect that you'll use the office to get rich.

(He did end up getting brought up on new charges stemming from his reelection, though, so...)

I have to agree that the crook was the better choice of the two but it just makes my blood boil that you don't seem to be able to get into any position of power unless you're corrupt or have some kind of crazy belief system be it religious or sociological.

In our Presidential election, we have one guy who seems to be a decent guy, and while he's still a politician, he honestly seems to be running to make things better.

And he's getting hammered. The lies, obfuscation and attacks are painful to watch. I had a lot of hope when he first came around, but I'm starting to despair...
