Aug. 27th, 2005 12:26 amOk, those of you who have RPed with me know what I'm like at choosing names. Jackie and I are planning on going to Odyssey next year and I'd forgotten just how many pretty ancient Greek/Roman names there are to choose from. I've managed to get the list down from 20 something to 10 and figured I'd see what a few neutral opinions said about various names.
JULIANA - (feminine of Julius) From a Roman family name which was possibly derived from Greek ιουλος (ioulos) "downy-bearded". Alternatively, it could be related to the name of the Roman god JUPITER. This was a prominent patrician family of Rome, claiming descent from the mythological Julus, son of Aeneas. Its most notable member was Gaius Julius Caesar, ruler of the Roman Republic and a skillful military leader who increased the borders of the Republic into Gaul before being stabbed to death in the senate. This was also the name of three popes.
Ok so this one is mainly on the list because of JC and Asher's Juliana...
LAELIA - Feminine form of Laelius, a Roman family name of unknown meaning. This is also the name of a type of flower, an orchid found in Mexico and Central America.
VALERIA - Roman family name which was derived from Latin valere "to be strong". This was the name of several early saints.
ALTHEA - From the Greek name Αλθαια (Althaia), perhaps related to Greek αλθος (althos) "healing". In Greek myth she was the mother of Meleager. Soon after her son was born she was told that he would die as soon as a piece of wood that was burning on her fire was fully consumed. She immediately extinguished the piece of wood and sealed it in a chest, but in a fit of rage many years later she took it out and set it alight, thereby killing her son.
CLIO - Derived from Greek κλεος (kleos) meaning "glory". In Greek mythology she was the muse of history and heroic poetry. She was said to have introduced the alphabet to Greece.
IANTHE - Means "violet flower", derived from Greek ιον (ion) "violet" and ανθος (anthos) "flower". This was the name of an ocean nymph in Greek mythology.
MAIA - Meaning unknown. In Greek and Roman mythology she was the eldest of the Pleiades, the group of seven stars in the constellation Taurus, who were the daughters of Atlas and Pleione. Her son by Zeus was Hermes.
Means "great" in Latin. This was the name of the Roman goddess of spring, the wife of Vulcan. The month of May is named for her.
PHOEBE - Latinized form of the Greek name Φοιβη (Phoibe), which meant "bright, pure" from Greek φοιβος (phoibos). Phoibe was an epithet of the Greek moon goddess Artemis. A moon of Saturn bears this name in her honour. This name was also borne by a female minister in the church at Cenchreae mentioned in Paul's epistle to the Romans in the New Testament.
THALIA - From the Greek Θαλεια (Thaleia), derived from θαλλω (thallo) meaning "to blossom". In Greek mythology she was the muse of comedy and pastoral poetry. This was also the name of one of the three Graces (Χαριτες).
ELISSA - Meaning unknown (possibly Phoenician in origin). This is another name of Dido, the legendary queen of Carthage.
