May. 4th, 2006 11:43 pmWell folks that is what we call a rough day at work!
I know I've moaned about long shifts before, or not getting any sleep or whatever but today is the first time that Chris has actually gone for me. Apparently he'd been a bit off at Skills, wasn't interested in being with anyone else, aggressive towards a couple of the staff; it was enough that they'd given him diazepam so he was pretty sleepy by the time Claire and I picked him up. We got out the door and everything was fine, had to wait around for a bit and Chris was very wobbly but the sun was out so it was all good. Then we started walking.
Now Chris stopping on the way home is fairly common, especially if the sun is out, so when he put his arm out like he wanted a hug I thought nothing of going to oblige with one. He moved his hand up and put it on my head, again, fairly common, seems to be his way of making sure that you're there. Next thing I know he's grabbed hold of a good handfull of my hair and yanked my head downwards! Not fun. He did let go when Claire and I told him to and hair pulling has never particularly bothered me, it was just a bit of a shock. Anyway, after that Claire and I swapped, I took the bag and she took Chris. Again everything was good until he decided that he didn't want help getting home, dug his nails into the back of her fingers and stopped again after feeling his way along the fence for a while. He banged his head against the fence then tried to bite Claire when she attempted to stop him. All fun and games there then! After that we had to sort of lead him at arms length, he tried biting a couple more times but never got anywhere, we both made sure to be out of reach when he started feeling around for something to grab.
All in all it took us a good 15-20 minutes to do a 5 minute walk. I suppose it's something to be thankful for that we managed to get him across the road without him stopping in the middle. Once we got in he just went to bed and slept for 5 hours solid, I suppose heavy duty sedatives will do that to you! The rest of the shift was pretty quiet although we spent a good hour writing up the notes and incident reports. You could tell I was shaken up, it took Claire putting the kettle on to remind me that tea would be good!
And after all that? Yes I still love my job, yes I still think Chris is a sweetheart and love him to bits...does that make me crazy? Oh well, tomorrow is a day off and I intend to relax, there's a barbeque in the offing and then Love Bites in the evening, should be a good one and just what I need after today.
Night all
